COOL PEOPLE | THE WANTON BISHOPS
The Wanton Bishops şimdiye dek duymadığınız grupların en iyisi olabilir. Vokal, gitar, klavye ve armonika Nader’e ait. Gitar ve back vokallerde ise Eddy var. Ortadoğu’’da Indie müziğin en iyi işlerinin demir aldığı Beyrut, Lübnan’’dan geldiler. Enerji dolu Lo-fi Blues Rock karışımlarının izi Delta Blues ve 60’’ların İngiliz Rock müziği birleştiren bir grup.
Rolling Stones dergisi onlar için “Salaş, ham ve düpedüz ikna edici” diyor.Timeout Beyrut dergisi onları 2012 yılının en iyi grubu seçti! The Wanton Bishops’ın sahne performansları ve etkileyici müzikleri Türkiye’de de büyük bir ses getirdi. Şimdi hep beraber bu ikili ‘cool’ adamları dinleyelim.

Kimsin ve ne iş yapıyorsun?
Nader: The Wanton Bishops Grub’un solistiyim.
Eddy: Benim adım Eddy Ghossein, müzisyenim.
Çocukluğundan hatırladığın en sevdiğin obje nedir? (kıyafet-oyuncak vb.)
Nader: Gençken sürekli Jimi Hendrix’in kasetini dinlerdim.
Eddy: Ailemin bana hediye ettiği ilk Alman kurt köpeğimi hiç unutmam. Yaz boyunca sürekli ona garip yemekleri hazırlardım ve onu deli gibi eğitirdim. Hatta bir keresinde ateş çemberinden zıplattırmaya niyetlendim ama iyi bir sonuç alamadım. Çok gençtim.
Aldığın en pahalı parça hangisi?
Nader: En son aldığım gitarım ve inan çok para verdim!
Eddy: Bir araba, ama teknik olarak bir bankaya ait kredi kartıyla aldığım için
Dolabındaki en cool parça?
Nader: Kahverengi ayakkabılarım veya deri pantolonum! Karar veremiyorum.
Eddy: Babama ait olan vintage tüvit bir ceket. Hiç eskimiyor.
Sadece bir markadan giyiniyor olsan hangisini tercih ederdin? Neden?
Nader: Kesinikle Cavalli olurdu. Çünkü şu anda Roberto Cavalli’nin oğlu Dani hem koleksiyon hem de sunumlara büyük destek veriyor. Kendisi büyük blues ve rock fanatiği olduğu için, yarattığı koleksiyonlar ruhuma ve hayat tarzıma çok uyuyor.
Eddy: Kesinikle Paul Smith olurdu. Ne kadar inovatif , modern ve trendy dursa da otantik ve klasik tarafı asla kaybetmiyor. Tıpkı benim gibi.
Beyrut’un en cool mekanı?
Nader: Torino Express, salaş ve uğrak bir bar. Alkolün ve kültürün birleştiği, yeryüzündeki bir cennet orası.
Eddy: Üniversite yıllarımda arkadaşlarımla çok zaman geçirdiğim, ilk aşklarımı yaşadığım ve çok eğlendiğim küçük bir kafe. Artık öyle bir yer yok.
Şans verilseydi dünyada hangi şehri veya semti baştan yaratmak isterdin?
Nader: Tabii ki Beyrut! Beyrut’u baştan aşağıya değiştirip bir mücevher haline getirirdim. Çok eski tarihi ve zengin kültürden oluşan şehri modern yapılaşmanın açgözlülüğu neredeyse yok etmiş durumda.
Eddy: Nader’a katılıyorum, kesinikle Beyrut olurdu! Elli sene önce Beyruti hem otantik hem de gayet modern bir şehir planlamasına sahipti. Şu anda belli bir şehir planlaması yok ve her gün yeni ve biçimsiz uzun ofis tipli evler mantar gibi çoğalıyor.
Evinin dekorasyonundaki en sevdiğin obje?
Nader: Klasik Lübnan mimarisine sahip bir evim var ve içindeki muntazam çiniler favorim.
Eddy: Babamın dünyanın farklı şehirlerinden topladığı ve koleksiyon haline getirdiği flüt koleksiyonu. Benim için hep bir ilham kaynağı olmuştur.
İlham aldığın stil sahibi biri var mı? Kim ve neden?
Nader: www.mytheresa.com site’nin satın alma müdürü, Justin O’shea. Seçtiği parçaların kalıpları, stili ve kombinleri inanılmaz!
Eddy: Takip ettiğim belli bir stil ikon yok. 60’ların şık ‘rockstar’ gençliğin hayat tarzları ve stilleri seviyorum.
Bugüne kadar çalarak en zevk aldığınız mekan/party/şehir ve nedeni?
Nader: Bir keresinde Brazilya’nın kuzey-güney tarafındaki bir sahilde hiç tanımadığım turistler ile deli gibi eğlenmiştim. Eğlence dediğin plansız programsız olmalı, keyfi orda zaten.
Eddy: Etrafımda kafa dengi insanlar olduktan sonra yer ve mekan hiç önemli değil.
The Wanton Bishops may very well be the best band you’ve never heard of. Nader (vocals, guitar, keyboards, harmonica) and Eddy (guitar, backing vocals) hail from Beirut, Lebanon, the new beating heart of the Arab world’s indie music scene. Their energetic brand of lo-fi blues rock revival can be traced back to the Delta Blues and English rock of the 60s. It has been described by Rolling Stone magazine as “ramshackle, raw and utterly convincing”. In the short time they’ve been around, they’ve seduced audiences back home with their guttural live show energy, and especially their Turkish fans, they’ll be hitting the road for a European tour, including France, Belgium, and Scandinavia. Lets here what they are so cool about?

Who are you and what do you do for living?
Nader: Lead singer of The Wanton Bishops.
Eddy: My name is Ghossein. Eddy Ghossein, I’m a musician.
What was your favorite thing that you remember from your childhood? (toy, clothing and etc.)
N: Stumbling upon a Jimi Hendrix cassette way too early, at a luna park; an odd blessing at that age.
E: I remember when we first got a dog, a German shepherd. We were so happy we went crazy. We spent the summer cooking him weird combo meals, training him for military, attack strategies. We even tried the ring of fire, that didn’t end up nicely.
What was the most expensive thing you ever bought?
N: My latest guitar!! It cost a shitload.
E: A car. Though technically it belongs to the bank.
What is the coolest piece in your wardrobe?
N: My brown shoes or my leather pants!! I can’t decide.
E: A tweed jacket that used to belong to my father; never gets old.
If it is set to wear only one brand forever, which brand would it be? Why?
N: That would be Cavalli. Now that Roberto’s son Dani’s taking care of the collections and presentations, he’s a huge blues and rock fanatic, and he’s being inspired by that to produce a great concept of rock n rolla bluesman gentlmen club. I like that, obviously.
E: That would be Paul Smith. It’s innovative and unique while preserving a great deal of authenticity and classicism.
What is your favorite place in Italy or in city you live? (bar, restaurant, caffe and etc.)
N: It’s a dingy dive bar in Beirut called Torino express; The alcoholic and cultural equivalent of heaven.
E: There used to be this very old café next to university, where I would hang out, study, party, and engage in romantic endeavors behind kitchen doors. It was demolished a few years ago.
If you had a chance to recreate or rebuild any city in the world, which city would it be? Why?
N: My own, Beirut!! I’d make a jewel out of it, it’s got the most beautiful potential, between history and modernity, the whole eaten out by a lot of greed. E: Beirut, obviously. It used to be a wonderful place 50 years ago. Somehow, somewhere, something went wrong, now it wallows in the lack of urban planning, and the greed of skyscrapers.
What is your favorite decorative object in your house?
N: I was lucky enough to get my hand on a traditional Lebanese house that I rent out now, and the tiles are just magnificent.
E: My father’s flute collection, placed on a cupboard in the living room. He made sure to buy one in every country he visited, always an inspiration.
If there is any style icon you follow, who is it and why?
N: That would be Justin O’shea, the buying director of Mytheresa.com. Tatts, beard, fits, and style!
E: No style icon, but I like the 60’s mod rockstars and how they dressed.
What was the coolest party, club 0r city you had the best fun ever? Why?
N: Somewhere in the North East of Brazil, under a cool jeweled moon in the middle of nowhere on a deserted beach, around a huge fire pit, with a bunch of absolutely crazy travelers; It was all by accident.
E: What matters is the company, never the place.
