Özel gecelerin vazgeçilmez parçası, düğünlerde ise damatlık olarak kullanılan smokin’nin terimi, modaya 1880 yılında Monte – Carlo’dan girdi. Soylu erkeklerin, akşam yemeklerinde ve davetlerde sigara, puro içmeye ayrılmış özel salona geçmeden önce sigara kokusu sinmemesi için kıyafetlerinin üstüne giydikleri cekete “smokin” deniyordu.
